Which herbal medicines should you buy?

The term ‘herbal medicines’ refers to the products that contain or are derived from the plant material in which they are manufactured.

It is used to describe any of the medicinal compounds that are used to treat illnesses.

Herbal medicines contain either ingredients such as plant materials or compounds derived from plants.

For example, the ingredients used to make herbal teas contain ingredients from the mint, rosemary, thyme, chamomile, basil and other herbs.

Herbs are often used to help relieve pain and anxiety, relieve nausea and treat conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), depression, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma.

But these herbal medicines are not always safe or effective.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared herbal medicines to be highly dangerous, and a recent survey found that up to half of all herbal products tested were unsafe or ineffective.

To make matters worse, some herbal products have been linked to the consumption of illegal drugs and the spread of infectious diseases.

Some herbal products also contain chemicals that are not approved for human consumption, including arsenic, mercury, lead, cadmium and cadmias.
