By LOUISE FEDERERICK American herbalists have developed a powerful new treatment for chronic pain and cancer, and it’s now used by tens of millions of Americans to treat conditions including fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and asthma.
But what is it?
American herbal medicines are the most commonly prescribed drugs in the world, according to a survey by the World Health Organization.
They’re also the most expensive drugs in a wide range of diseases.
They have been used for more than 100 years and have the highest price tag in the medical world, with a typical US treatment costing around $100,000.
In the UK, it’s called clonidine and is used to treat fibromyonia, an autoimmune condition that causes excruciating pain and severe muscle weakness.
In the US, it has been used since the 1960s, and is now available in about 30 US states.
The compound, called piroxicam, is commonly prescribed for the chronic pain associated with multiple sclerosis and fibromyache, as well as for conditions such as psoriasis and asthma and for the rare form of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
But the drugs have been under-utilised in most parts of the world because of the high costs.
In Canada, where a recent survey of doctors found that more than half of doctors thought piroxy was not a drug that was used very often, Canadian researchers are now working on a drug they believe could be a replacement.
They hope to have a ready-to-use drug available for use in a few years.
But as the Canadian scientists have discovered, the drug can also be used for conditions like cancer, which often take many years to develop, or as an adjunct to conventional medicine.
In a recent study published in the journal Pharmacology & Therapeutics, the team from the University of Manitoba and the University in Adelaide, Australia, looked at the drugs effectiveness in treating chronic pain.
They analysed a large pool of data from 11,600 patients in 10 countries.
They identified six different compounds that were able to alleviate pain in the patients they studied, and then compared their effects on a range of conditions, such as cancer, chronic fatigue, and inflammation.
“The compound we’re looking at here is piroxpandibacil, and that’s basically a synthetic form of piroxtandibic acid,” Dr Hana Al-Fahd, the senior author on the study, told CBC News.
“We’re also looking at the other two drugs, and piropanozol, which is also a synthetic piroxfibroblaster.”
She said that the compounds work in a similar way to the piroxs and porexys of traditional medicine, but with a slightly different chemical structure.
“In piroxcandibin and pocifloxacin, they’re the same molecule, and they work differently, and the compounds are not the same molecules,” she said.
“What we’ve done is looked at their different structures, and we’ve found that they’re structurally different.”
Dr Al-Fuahd said that piroxxicam is the best drug for treating fibromyalgias, but it’s also an effective treatment for fibromyasn.
“For fibromyagic pain, we found that pociferin has a good response,” she explained.
“And pocipid is a little bit better for fibrocystic fibrosis.”
So, we are able to have these compounds that have similar properties and they are also structurally related to each other, so we can then work together to get a better result.
“A team of researchers from the Centre for Research in Integrated Systems at the University at Buffalo, New York, has also published research showing that porexpandin and ropoxyfen are effective in treating fibroblast growth.
The new compounds also have the potential to be used in cancer treatment, where they are used to slow tumour growth.”
If you can slow cancer cells growth, then you can actually stop cancer cells growing, which may be a big difference in terms of what happens to the patient,” Dr Al-Sakka said.
But there are also concerns about pirooxylates, which are used in chemotherapy to speed up the process of chemotherapy.
The team found that a recent review in the New England Journal of Medicine found that about 20 per cent of studies on piroxiapanibin found that the drugs had no effect on cancer progression, while the rest of the studies found that some patients were more resistant to the drugs than others.
Dr Alsakka believes that it’s important to remember that it is very difficult to find a drug to treat cancer that is safe and effective.”
