The Australian Journal of Psychiatry published a study in which it found CBD oil helped people with depression and anxiety to cope better with depression.
“It’s a novel therapeutic intervention, it’s based on a well-established therapy and it may be helpful to people who are depressed,” Associate Professor David Mowbray, from the School of Pharmacy at Curtin University, told ABC News.
CBD is also a common ingredient in many anti-depressants, which could help reduce the number of people suffering from anxiety and depression, he said.
CBD oil also has some medicinal properties, which means that it may help relieve nausea and vomiting, or relieve headaches and nausea, or reduce the symptoms of asthma, allergies and depression.
CBD and the CBD compound It’s a relatively small molecule.
“Its a small molecule that has very low activity at high concentrations and it’s one of those molecules that people tend to associate with the benefits of CBD,” Professor Mowbrey said.
“There’s not a lot of evidence that suggests that there’s anything like this for depression and bipolar disorder, but it could be useful in that context.”
Dr Jennifer Eppley, a mental health nurse from Sydney’s Mount Isa, said that CBD oil could be used in conjunction with other therapies.
“CBD has been shown to be a very effective treatment for a variety of things including depression, and bipolar disorders, as well as some of the other mental health conditions, including anxiety,” Dr Epply said.
She said that people could also use CBD oil as a supplement for people with severe migraines, which is a serious disorder.
“If people have migraine and they’re having a severe, frequent, intense pain in their head, then it may have an effect on their brain chemistry, which can have some sort of benefit, so it could also be a possible way to reduce the frequency and intensity of those migrainES.”
Dr Eppy said that the use of CBD oil in this way could be a good option for people who were suffering from a range of mental health issues.
“Because it’s a very small molecule, you don’t need to have a lot to get it into your body,” she said.
Dr Eippley said that although there had been a lot published about CBD oil, there was little research on its use in people with schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and PTSD.
“So there’s no real evidence that it’s useful for people suffering with those conditions,” she told ABC.
“But, as with any treatment, it has to be given as a starting point.”
She said CBD oil was an option for patients who were having severe anxiety and were not taking any other medication.
“And, for those people, they may want to get off their medication and see if there’s some other treatment that works better, so they can get back to their medications,” she added.
“We’re not saying that’s a cure, but, you know, they’re getting some relief from the anxiety that’s been going on, and they may be able to move on to another medication that works, which will be their first.”
Professor Mower said that it was possible that CBD could help with some people’s depression.
It was not yet clear whether this would be for people experiencing psychosis or schizophrenia, or people who suffered from other mental illnesses.
“For those people it may work very well, but for those with other mental illness, it could possibly be helpful,” he said, “and for some people, that might be the case.”
Dr Mower also said that there were people who had used CBD oil to help manage anxiety, but that this was “very, very rare”.
He said that while CBD oil might be helpful for people on their own, it should be taken as part of a larger medical treatment plan.
